Over the course of the first decade and a half of the twenty-first century an increased number of nurses and other hospital workers have died as a result of asbestos-related illnesses such as asbestosis and mesothelioma.
It is a great tragedy that so many people whose job and motivation was to care for other people should have their lives ended by a threat they were at the time never aware of: asbestos.
If you worked in UK hospitals and have since been diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness call 0800 508 8747 today to discuss the possibility of making a claim.
A common story
Because of the long latency periods associated with asbestos illnesses it is very common for nurses who worked in asbestos-lagged, asbestos-insulated and asbestos-plastered hospitals to be diagnosed with illnesses such as mesothelioma when they are in their fifties, sixties or seventies. It could be said that there is a particular cruelty to the fact that so many of these nurses are being diagnosed with their illnesses just as they reach retirement age.
For a long time it was thought that the only occupational groups at risk of these diseases were skilled labourers and tradesmen such as shipyard workers, carpenters and plumbers, but over the years it has become tragically apparent that workers from less obvious occupational groups, for example nurses, doctors, laundry operatives and hospital porters are also at risk.
The anecdotal evidence is supported by the statistics. Figures from the Health and Safety Executive show a rising number of nurses among the 4,000 people killed by asbestos illnesses such as mesothelioma. For example, between 1980 and 2000 there were 49 recorded nurse deaths, while between 2002 and 2005 there were 25.
"Compared with those working directly with asbestos, the risk for nurses is lower - but that's still a risk too many," says a manager with the Royal College of Nursing.
