A Derby charity has received funding to chart the history of asbestos and asbestos-related diseases in the county. A £3,800 Heritage Lottery Fund grant will allow Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team (DAST) to collect stories from those in the county who have been affected by the deadly fibre, as well as recording how and where it was used within local industries.
The head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in the East Midlands outlined the goal of the project. He said it "will ensure the stories of those affected are not forgotten whilst helping to raise awareness of asbestos and how to avoid it".
The charity is calling for people who worked with asbestos between 1945 and 1991 to come forward with photographs of themselves at work and of the products that contained the substance.
Offering support, information and advice about mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases, the Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team also helps those within Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Burton-on-Trent and Lincolnshire. The team's work includes spreading awareness, hosting meetings and helping the bereaved.
